1. Claude code, what it is and how to set it up

Claude code is the desktop app from anthropic that lets you chat with claude AND have it actually do things on your computer (open files, run programs, edit code, generate images via wonda). It's the same claude as on the web, but with hands.

There are 3 ways to use it: the desktop app (easiest), in your terminal, or as an extension inside VS Code / Cursor / JetBrains. For a novice the desktop app is the only one that matters.

A few things worth knowing upfront:

• Claude code is different from claude cowork. Cowork is the chat-style assistant for documents and tasks. Claude code is built for actually doing work on files in a folder on your computer
• You always have to point claude code at a folder before it can do anything. Think of the folder as its desk; everything it reads / writes / generates lives in there. Make a folder called claude-projects somewhere obvious (your Desktop is fine) and use that.
• The terminal is just a text window where programs print stuff. You don't have to type into it; claude code does that for you. You'll see it inside the app as a small panel at the bottom. If something goes wrong, that's where the error shows up
